Farmscape Ecology Blog
There are many organizations that comprise the “Hawthorne Valley Association”. One of these I would like to highlight is the Farmscape Ecology Program (FEP). If you are wondering, “What is Farmscape Ecology?” in their own words they describe it on their homepage as…
In our books, ‘farmscape ecology’ refers to the patterning of life on our landscape. It is a landscape in which farming has played and does play a large role. We emphasize that role by calling our landscape a farmscape…
And, foremost perhaps, farmscape ecology includes looking at how the patterning of human and non-human ecologies interact, how does our activity, for example, determine where plants and animals can exist? How do those plants and animals, in turn, influence our existence? Where are there synergies, where are there disconnects between our own use and that of other organisms?
As a research facility they provide a vast array of both scientific and social information about the farmscape of Columbia County, NY and at times our relationship to the greater regions with which we interact.
I wish to highlight their blog: Natural and Agricultural Observations In & Around Hawthorne Valley, because its most recent post is about the FARM ANIMALS AT HAWTHORNE VALLEY AND THEIR WINTER HOMES.
If you wish to see the animals I work with daily (mostly the cows), and their friends cared for by all departments of the farm I highly recommend checking it out. Their other posts are also well worth the read.
If you are interested in the FEP’s research (Community Food Assessment, On-Farm Biodiversity, Native Bees, Food Miles, etc) and programming (Farmer’s Research Circle, Winter Explorations, Thursday night Pizza night, etc.) check out their website at hawthornevalleyfarm(dot)org(slash)fep.
